More information:“Water Margin,” one of China’s Four Great Classical Novels, is a novel based on historical events of the Northern Song dynasty, depicting the rebellion of heroes. Set in
the 12th century during the reign of an emperor, it tells the story of 108 heroes who, dissatisfied with the corrupt regime , gather together.
“Water Margin” became a huge hit in Edo-period Japan, and new stories and artistic expressions were developed by artists such as Kyokutei Bakin, Katsushika Hokusai, and Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Even today, it remains widely enjoyed in a variety of media, including novels, manga, films, dramas, and games.
This exhibition showcases Chinese and Japanese art and materials related to “Water Margin.” It also traces how the lives and values of the heroes have been depicted and received, exploring the reasons why “Water Margin” continues to captivate people today.
