More Information:Tengyu Miyako has been reconstructing what it felt like for her to be brought up in a secondhand bookstore—a repository of stories—as a device for telling stories, utilizing fabric, leather, and decorative materials. In recent years, Tengyu has been working with forms of expression utilizing words, such as poetry, and blurring the line between story and text, materials and the body. For this exhibition, the artist presents new works reminiscent of banners used as stage design. During the exhibition period, Tengyu will organize a “Ballroom” party based on queer culture,* with which she herself is closely associated through activities such as dance and costume design.
For Tengyu, sewing, decorating, and dancing are “spells” for dealing with the world, as well as a reservoir of actions for listening to those without a voice. This show attempts to travel freely back and forth between reality and stories through the exhibits and the party.
* “Queer culture” refers to the distinctive culture, social movement, history, and artistic expression shared by sexual minorities (such as LGBTQ+).
