Alphonse Mucha Museum (Sakai City Cultural Center)
Sakai City owns approximately 500 works by Czech painter Alphonse Mucha, collected by the late Kimio Doi (1926-1990), the founder of Doi Corporation and a leading figure in introducing Mucha to Japan. Through his public and private friendship with Mucha’s son, Jiri Mucha (Izzy Mucha), Mr. Doi devoted himself to building a rich collection that includes large oil paintings, preparatory drawings, and other valuable works that cannot be seen even in Mucha’s native country (now the Czech Republic). In 1989, he was awarded the Czechoslovak Highest Order of Cultural Merit.
Following his death, the collection was donated to and purchased by Sakai City where Mr. and Mrs. Doi once lived. Since 1994, it has been exhibited at the Portas Sakai Alphonse Mucha Gallery, and since 2000, it has been exhibited at the Sakai Alphonse Mucha Museum.
The museum holds themed exhibitions three times a year and shows a variety of exhibitions introducing all aspects of Mucha’s creative activities, from his early years in France and the United States to his later years in the Czech Republic.
