Katsuki Nogami, “Image Cemetery”
Katsuki Nogami is a media artist from Nagaoka City, Niigata, who is active both in Japan and abroad and was a resident of the Kitakagaya-based collaborative studio Super Studio Kitakagaya (SSK) until 2022.
Image Cemetery was announced at the SSK’s public open house Open Studio 2021 Autumn. The work is an attempt by the artist to merge himself with nature by printing his face on a large rock, trying to possess the digital images that tend to be consumed on social media like gravestones, and combining them with natural beliefs such as iwakura, the stone rocks worshiped in Shintoism.
