Artist: NAKANISHI Yasuhiro
This abstract sculpture, created from black granite, was exhibited at the 82nd Free Art Exhibition held at the National Art Center, Tokyo in 2018, where it was awarded the Grand Prix. Black granite is one of the hardest varieties of granite, and achieving a flawless mirror finish requires exceptional precision—any slight imperfection or scratch can compromise the final buff-polishing stage.
Thanks to its durability, the material withstands outdoor environments and retains its luster over time. Its curved surfaces reflect the surrounding landscape, revealing different appearances and allowing viewers to enjoy subtle transformations with the changing seasons, time of day, and weather. At the center, a roughly carved section contrasts with the fluid, water-like smoothness of the surrounding forms, evoking the image of powerful forces converging into the central void.
When viewed from above, it suggests everything being drawn into the hole, creating an aura of mystery—as if an unknown space lies beyond, inviting contemplation of the infinite.
